The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is a non-competitive programme of practical cultural and adventurous activities for young people aged 14-25 years.

There are 3 levels Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Cadets are assesed in four different areas (5 for the gold award), these are:
Service - This involves helping others in their local community.
Expeditions - The cadets must plan and train for a journey, which could involve camping.
Physical Recreation - Some form of sport. This could be dancing, athletics or general fitness.
Skill - Demonstrate some degree of ability in any hobby or interest.
Residential Project - This is for the gold award only. The cadet must take part in a purposeful enterprise with other young people not previously known to them.
