[Home]->[Duke of Edinburgh Award]->Gold Award

Gold is the highest of all the awards and cadets must be at least 16 years to start the award and it will take at least a year to complete. Those starting with a gold award should expect it to take at least a year and a half.

To complete the gold award cadets must complete a service over 12 months and a skill and physical for a total of 18 months. Cadets can choose to do one for 12 months and the other for 6 months.

They must also plan and prepare a 4 day venture. Those starting with gold award must undertake an additional 6 months either the service or the longer of the skills or physical recreation.

Cadets must also complete the residential element of the award this involves a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights with people not known to them.

To help cadets complete this section the summer camps are ideal as there are 2 or more squadrons attending this means that cadets will be working with people they have not met before.

There are other avenues available if the cadet or award leader can arrange it. Possibilities includes youth hostels or sailing ships.

Cadets must be at least 17 years or 17 half for those starting at gold level. Those completing gold will be invited to London or Edinburgh to be presented with their award by a key figure, quite possibly HRH Prince Phillip.
