The ATC offers cadets the chance to fly in two different types of glider. The Grob Viking which is a winch launched glider and the Grob Vigilant which has its own engine to launch. The engine is turned off once airborn. In both of these the instructor will show the cadet the instruments & controls and give them a chance to fly the glider themselves. Flying time in gliders is dependant on which model and the weather, but is usually between 15 to 30 minutes. Due to its powered nature, a Vigilant can stay airborne for longer without needing to find a thermal, but if the weather is right, both can stay airborne for hours. |

Gliding Scolarships
Cadets who are aged 16 or over have the opportunity to learn how to fly the gliders solo. The course can be carried out in a week, or over a number of weekends and covers, taxiing, taking off & landing in addition to normal flight manouevers. Once the instructor believes that the cadet has attained a good standard of airmanship, they will be sent on a solo flight, where they will take off, fly a circuit and land safely. If a cadet shows particluar aptitude, once they have completed their scholarship, they may be asked to return to the gliding school to continue their training and possibly become a gliding instructor themself. |
